We left Rock Island and headed out to Hannibal Missouri, hometown of Samuel Clemons (aka Mark Twain). We parked in a campground that contained the Mark Twain Cave. This was the cave that inspired Clemons to fictionalize it in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Clemons, as a boy, added his signature to the graffiti in the cave. This was also allegedly a hideout used by Jesse James.
Hannbal has thoroughly embraced Samuel Clemons has devoted at large part of the downtown to celebrating Clemons and mapping the characters in his book to his childhood friends.
