After buttoning up the house, doing some small chores, we finally got the rig fired up and got on the road to Alaska.
Our first stop was the Rolling Hills Casino in Corning California. We often stop there first on our road trips. It has a nice RV park, some decent food and we like the low intensity casino – though we strictly limit our gambling losses. It is also the place we will ready the rig for the upcoming nights of boondocking.
The Salinas property does not have potable water on site, so we carried only enough water to flush and wash our hands and we dumped and filled at Rolling Hills.
The next couple of days will be kind of interesting: we don’t really have a destination in mind. There is still a small possibility that we can get onto the caravan going to the Calgary Stampede, so we need to be in the area of Coeur d’Alene, ID until July 8 when the Caravan departs.
If July 8th comes and we don’t make the Caravan, we will most likely head west to Prince George BC and the Cassiar.
We have no reservations and will boondock or take pot latch from now (July 5) to June 8.
On a Caravan
You gotta be flexible. I’ve always belived that. And it came true yesterday.
Yesterday, we were in Corning California, planning a nice 2-3 day trip to be near the start of the Alaska caravan, when we got a call.
The caravan that was immediately before one we were standing by for, had a sudden opening. Fantasy RV Tours called us to see if we would be interested in that one. It would also allow the people that had to drop to recover a good portion of their tour fee.
The only problem was that it had already started with the welcome dinner, etc. and would be leaving July 7 early in the morning. To make that Caravan we had to cover 735 miles in a single day. Not so easy in a 37 foot Motorhome.
We talked over, agreed it would be hard and said “Yes”.
It was hard. but we did it in 15 hours pulling into Coeur D’ Alene at 12:30 in the morning.
We were beat. But not so beat that we couldn’t attend that morning travel briefing and the wine tasting.
We were so last minute they had to fedex our id cards to us…
Here is hoping that this is worst thing that happens to me on this Caravan.
